Jacob Kiplimo added another gold medal to Uganda’s tally in the ongoing Commonwealth Games after winning the 10,000m race.

Kiplimo shattered his compatriot Joshua Cheptegei’s record enroute to winning this year’s competition.

He posted a time of 27:09:19 which is the new record for the Commonwealth Games. Kenyans Daniel Simiu Ebenyo and Kandie Kibiwott won silver and bronze posting a time of 27:11:26 and 27:20:34 respectively.

Kiplimo said that he hopes this is just the start of something big in his career as he looks towards making history in further upcoming competitions.

“I think for me winning this Commonwealth Games title was everything, the most important thing for me this season. But I still have a lot of things to do in the future at the Olympics and world championships,” Kiplimo noted moments after the race as quoted by the Daily Monitor.

Kiplimo had won the bronze medal in the World Athletics Championship prior to clinching gold in Birmingham.

Cheptegei who held the record in the Commonwealth Games for the 10,000m didn’t participate in the games after he opted out due to fatigue. This is after he won gold a few days ago in the World Athletics Championship.

A number of Ugandans have taken to social media to congratulate Kiplimo upon this win.

Uganda has made rhe category her own in these games. No athlete has won the 10,000m in the Commonwealth Games since 2006.
